What are pimples?

As most of us already know, pimples are a kind of acne. There are two kinds of pimples: blackheads and whiteheads. They are both the result of excess oil and dirt becoming trapped in your pores.

Tiny glands exist inside of our pores, and these glands are constantly producing an oily substance called sebum. Normally, this oily stuff will just seep out of the pore, but sometimes clumps of dead skin cells can become stuck together by the sticky sebum causing a blockage.

Blackheads are pimples that result when the sebum is exposed to air (a chemical reaction takes place that causes the sebum to turn black).

Whiteheads are pimples that develop when the area around the pore becomes subject to inflammation. This happens when the area becomes infected by bacteria that live inside the sebum.
